Provincial Championships - Coquitlam BC

Five skaters from the MBSC competitive figure skating program recently took part in the 2016 BC/YK Sectional Championships in Coquitlam BC Nov 5-8. This prestigious event is the provincial qualifier for skaters with ambitions of competing nationally and internationally, bringing out the best from all corners of British Columbia.

The week started with Pre Juvenile Ladies U11 competitor, Kira Koffler. 11 year old Koffler ended up in 6th place in the field of 33 skaters with a personal best score of 21.67 points which was the result of a performance that was her best of the season.

Taking part in her first Sectional Championships, Taylor Fleming (12) competed in the 27 skater Juvenile Ladies U14 event. Fleming earned a new personal best score of 22.23 points landing 4 clean doubles skating to an entertaining jazz piece which earned her a spot in the top 10.

In the Juvenile Ladies U12 event, 12 year old Tianna Potts was the final competitor in the group of 26 skaters. She had a minor mistake on the double lutz, double loop combination that proved costly in the highly competitive group of up and coming talent where she ended up in 9th place with a score of 25.48 approximately 4 points off her seasons best score which landed her in 4th place overall in the Pond to Podium Super Series standings.

Makenna Jensen (15) and Kayla Smart (15) both competed in the Novice Ladies event on Saturday and Sunday. In the short program both skaters began the event in the first flight of 28 skaters all vying for a coveted spot on the BC Team. First time Novice competitor, Jensen skated a personal best short program earning a score of 29.19 points which ranked her in 8th place going into the free program. Smart who had to withdraw from the previous event in October due to an injury, performed one her best short programs earning 32.63 which placed her in 5th place going into the freeskate portion of the event. Jensen earned a new personal best score of 49.93 in the free program which landed her in 13th place overall. Skating in the final flight Smart gave one of her best performances on record scoring 65.94 with a clean program earning the second highest program component scores of the event which imporoved her overall ranking to 4th place which qualified her to the upcoming 2016 Skate Canada Challenge National Qualifier December 2-6 in Edmonton, AB and a spot on the BC Team.
